Is the US media leading America to (another) war?

In the past, war reporters bravely followed soldiers into the jaws of war. Today, it looks like the soldiers are embedded in the media instead, simply going along for the story.

US President Barack Obama on Tuesday decided to send additional 30 thousand US troops to Afghanistan, officials say.

It took the US President almost a year to review the US strategy in Afghanistan.

Obama has been dogged by a rising death toll among US and coalition troops, an Afghan presidential election overshadowed by fraud allegations, and intensifying Taliban activity.

Officials say that Obama will after all committ 30 thousand more troops that should be deployed over a period of six months.

But skepticism about Obama’s new exit strategy is in the air.

“He is talking about some sort of off ramps that could be potential ways for the US to begin to leave,” investigative journalist and policy analyst Gareth Porter told RT. “I think that’s a big question mark and I don’t know if they really have a clear idea of how they are going to do it. I’m afraid that there is a logic here of sending more troops and then having difficulty getting them out.”

Nobel Peace Prize for Obama I sent the flwg email to the Nobel Prize peace comittee: Alfred Nobel must be turning himself in his grave after the peace prize was awarded to a war monger Obama, who just upped the troops in ‘his’ war by 30’000 men, representing a nation that has killed hundreds of thousands of civilians and which started every major war after WWII. Further, this guy has done nothing in the Middle East to promote peace, nor has he learned a lesson from his predecessor to stop invading foreign sovereign nations by slaughtering its citizens. What kind of democracy and human right record is this? So far this guy has only proven himself being a smooth talker. Where are his actions? Oh, yes there are, send more troops to kill more civilians preferably with the latest threat to any nation, by drones, from behind a desk somewhere in Denver some 10’000 miles away… What a pitty! Your committee did Mr. Nobel and his cause a disservice with this. I turned off the TV set in disgust when I learned about it. If there is nobody who disserves Mr. Nobel’s prize for promoting peace in the world, for heaven’s sake, then don’t offer it. There is nothing wrong by skipping a year or two until a person comes along who really made a worthwhile and lasting contribution for peace. This just a thought.

Katherine and Echo, Despite the fact you both must know that American soldiers fighting wars of imperialism in Afghanistan, you want to reduce the argument a simple case of ‘supporting the troops’! This is not different from how German population convinced itself Wehrmarcht troops were keeping Germany at the Volga [see battle for Stalingrad) in WWII. It seems that Katherine is convinced that the best way to keep America save is an open ended military offensive. Do you think that this will not increase the likelihood of blow back from those whose loved ones are bombed, killed and occupied by the United States? Why not ask American soldiers whether they wish to continue fighting these wars of empire building? Literature suggests that American soldiers do not wish to continuing fighting endless wars of occupation. If you truly support the American troops then ask elected officials to bring them home to their families.

I am a twice wounded combat veteran of Vietnam. I feel the troop surge the president is proposing is just about the stupidest move he could possibly make. We could be there 100 years, and when we leave, the country will revert right back to their old ways; of that I can guarantee you, just look at the debacle of Vietnam.
