Awarded for saving the world from another US war (or at least a war hungry US administration). Without Obama at the helm chances are there would be bloodshed in Iran (and therefore Israel, Lebanon, Syria, and possibly even Pakistan), a brewing confrontation with Russia, and the prospect of a war on the Korean pennisula. Mix in China (Taiwan, containment, etc), and an increase in the interference in other countries around the world, and you have a dangerous cocktail indeed. Obama has apprently decided not to swallow it so WW3 looks like its been put back a while - reason enough for the the award in my opinion.

NASA just bombed the Moon, and their boss gets the peace prize on the very same day! Maby the Nobel folks figure that since we're not bombing anywhere on Earth, we Americans are making progress. Oh, I forgot about Afghanistan and Pakistan, sorry.

Awarded for not doing anything. Obama has destroyed America...actually, Obama and Bush destroyed America. America is a joke to the eyes of the world now. We are trillions in debt, we have to borrow 3 billion a day from China to keep our economy going. The dollar is about to fail, we are neck deep in two wars - of which Obama has only talked with the Commander in Afghanistan twice, re-authorized the (un)Patriot Act, supports domestic wire-tapping, only escalated tensions in the middle east, turned a cold shoulder to our greatest Ally (UK) after snubbing Brown at the UN and giving him a pack of DVDs as a 'welcome to America' gift. The award was a joke - just like the lost Olympic bid.

If 2, 3 or more persons could share amongst themselves Noble Prizes, so why only President Obama for the NPP? I mean there are other eligible Presidents, PMs or outstanding statesmen around the world who would not want a WW3, too. I am happy for Mr Obama but the commitee could have shared the Award with the likes of Mr Medvedev or Mr Lavrov.

I think Obama is a good guy, and his diplomacy thus far in his presidency has been quite cooperative, respectful, and in some theaters successful. His pursuance of a nuclear free world and a more socially just and economically stable US is also admirable. As Jim mentions, the results of some of the aforementioned are quite significant indeed. However, he perhaps lacks some of the purity I would expect a Nobel peace prize winner to have. He is, as are all US presidents, the head of the US military. That military under his direction is engaging in conflicts in which innocents inevitably die. Albeit, in Afghanistan since he came into office, far greater priority has been put on protecting the regions civilians and minimizing their casualties even if it comes at the expense of killing the enemy. He is, given Israel's intransigent present government probably vainly, trying to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I suppose granting him the prize does make a certain amount of sense. However, it will of course be very controversial. Many people are too attached to their preconceptions about my country, and within my country suspicious of the left, to take Obama at face value. Furthermore, it is very unusual for the committee to give an award to a sitting head of head state. This invites a conception of national bias on the part of the committee. Certainly the U.S as whole doesn't presently deserve such a reward given the aggregate of its recent history, but this prize is to an individual, not a country. In short, in spite of his achievements and what he has tried to pursue, many people are too cynical about Obama to agree with this decision. Time will tell how right or wrong they are to be. My personal view is that Obama is for real, and that to the extent to which people let him he will more often than not make the US and the world a better place.

I think if any person deserve this award it should be our president, because he has already done tremendous things already for our country. This is a blessed moment for him and our country

Absolutely, President Obama deserved the Nobel Peace Prize for his call to world peace and for his peaceful respect for all human beings. Any American who cannot be happy that our President has been given this honor is a real loser.

I don't get it. The 2 wars are still going on, Guantanamo bay is still open and the national debt is still rising by the billions per minute. This is in my opinion a scam similar to when Al Gore received a Nobel Prize for his meta science. The Nobel Prize appears to be more politics and media than science, sadly :( Who decides the winners anyway? I would love to know what analysis and methods they used to come to this conclusion.

This shows that President Obama is doing a good job. He is uniting the people worldwide like no President has done for many years. I validate him getting the award and think it is a wonderful idea. I for one would like to see the American people especially give our President a chance. It is unbelievable how many "irons in the fire" that he has to deal with. Even when it is a wonderful salute to our President the right and even Christianity is bad mouthing him. Can't all you nay sayers just back off and let President Obama shine through and do the job that no one else has been able to do. I am putting all my trust in him and I think he will make us proud. And even then with egg on their faces these folks will continue to rant. They are not worth any merit

Well, as much as I respect President Obama (I voted for him), the Nobel Committee's decision to award him the peace prize exposes the annual prize-giving for what it is: a farcical exercise. If prizes were to be given for intentions and not for achievements, then Obama would have to wait a long time before deserving a peace prize. He hasn't achieved a single peaceful transaction yet. Not only that. He is involved in two wars and might even start a third one if some of his warmonger advisors get their way. Mr. Obama is leading sanctions against Iran. Can he tell the world for what reason? Is this an act of peace or a threat of non-peaceful intentions? Has he produced any evidence that Iran is preparing to manufacture nuclear weapons? Yet he appears to be following the footsteps of President Bush in the lead-up to the Iraq war. Sanctions are acts of war, not acts of peace. Iran has not, and is not, threatening any country, notwithstanding the refrains of certain sectors in the United States. Why would't the Nobel Peace Committee consider such names as Medvedev, Putin, Ju Hintao? Or, for that matter, Chavez, Gaddafy, Ahmadinedjad. All these leaders have not only expressed peaceful intentions, but have tangibly worked to bring their intentions into fruition. And, unlike the United States, they are threatening no other country. Then again, when I think of people like Begin, Perez, Kissinger who have also received the same prize in the past, I feel nothing but contempt for this vacuous annual festival.

Awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to Obama is a crime committed by the committee awarding these prizes because Obama is still at war with Islam and shedding the blood of Muslims in Afghanistan and Iraq. The President of the United States does not deserve this award because he is still following the Bush policies and working for the security of Israel by threatening Iran. The members of the committee awarding this prize to Obama should be prosecuted for war crimes because their decision is so insensitive and it is hurting Muslims all over the world.

Dont people get that Obama didnt start these wars? You dont just pull out from a war, without preparing for it. That counts for the US, as well as Russia... Obama seems as a great man, but I do now (didnt yesterday) agree that giving him the prize this year was a to early decision. Not matter how good his intentions are, we still have to see what he actually will achieve. Kinda funny though, that the russians are criticizing this because of the wars and so on, while the conservative americans (that usually have a hostile attitude towards Russia) claim that the nobel peace prize comitee is part of a socialistic plot that wants to "destroy america":D They think of Norway as socialistic^^

This award is a big farce. Obama and Bush do not either deserve any award even remotely related to peace. This award should be renamed the "RHETORIC {MOTOR MOUTH] award. Deeds, not talk, is what counts. This guy hasn't accomplished anything Shame on the misguided people who awarded this undeserved award. This pretty much makes the nobel peace prize irrelevant in the eyes of most people of the world. This is an insult to all the good people of the world who genuinely work for world peace.
