This is just a bandaid. What really ticked me off last week is when I heard that some of these huge health insurers invested billions of dollars into tobacco...and of course, they want profit. There doesn´t seem to be any concern for the person and his health. Let´s see how this national debate on health care goes in the U.S. in the weeks and months to come.

Unlike N.G., I do not think President Obama is a hypocit. He is trying to quit smoking. His two daughters do not smoke and he does not want them to start smoking cigarettes. Some people criticize him because they just don't like him.(including neocon Repulicans in the United States). Submitted by Gene Hopkins from San Francisco, CA, USA.

Obama will reduce smoking in the USA and icrease pollution everywhere-else. Huge american tobacco companies sell billions of cigarettes in China, India, China, Europe, Russia etc. and noone has so far thought about boycotting those products or simply declaring them dangerous to humans' health and unlawfull to sell. That is the whole US' decisions makers phylosophy and strategy: . The 95% humans who are not american citizen are all stupid enough to fall in such an insane tricks. Who are the dummies in the matter ? Sorry Future Generations !!! Sincerely. Jean-Claude Meslin

Why does every living thing that supports obama thinks that anybody who critizes the him, is a Republican or a neo-con?? I am an independent voter who did not vote for McPain OR Obama. They both are awful!! By the way, my grandparents smoked for all their adult lives and neither one died early. One at 91 and the other at 92 in an accident. My mom still smokes and she is 72 and healthier than me, always a non-smoker. I hate the "nanny-state" that is now the USA.

The issue with smoking is that it is an exercise of individual freedom. Obama hates freedom. He continually fights freedom wherever he encounters it. He thinks you should have to show YOUR identification documents but he should not have to show his. He thinks YOU should not be allowed to smoke but it's ok for him to do so. He thinks YOU should not be allowed to own guns but he wants a youth-corps that is just as big and just as strong as the military. (and just as well-armed) He is worse than Bush ever-was ... and those bigots who embrace Obama for no-other reason than his skin color will find out how torture hurts just as much when ordered by someone with brown skin as it does when ordered by someone with white skin. Decades of brainwashing people to accept a double-standard on matters of race are coming back to destroy America...by design.

Choices to smoke cigarettes are typically not individual, and rarely do people subjectively make the decision to start. It is usually through social pressures or in much part to do the way that cigarettes have been marketed in the past. Today it is people in developing areas of the world that are suffering the consequences of this toxic industry as marketing and influence from tobacco companies are still very relevant in most of these nations. Secondly, it's one thing for adults to make the choice but kids are often the target- celebrities are continually captured glamorizing the action of smoking.
