Referenda on applying for statehood, becoming independent, etc. have been held in Puerto Rico many times. They have consistently failed. However, maybe the latest efforts will be more successful. On the other side of the "story," this article convenient fails to mention that residents of Puerto Rico are not liable for US federal income taxes. Question: How many residents of the 50 states would be willing to "give up" their rights to vote in federal elections, if at the same time they could be excluded from filing US federal income taxes every year? I am willing to bet that it would be a lot of people!!!

Puerto Rico is simply occupied territory by the US!!! It should be an independant state, where people will be equal and will have more rights!!!

This is a matter of having the political power to trace our own destiny. There are individuals that love not paying Federal Income Tax, even though it means not having any political power to determine their future. Those individuals give puertorricans a bad name. At this point in history, only Stataheood give us the political power to become owners of our own destiny as US Citizens! How many residents of the 50 states would be willing to "give up" their rights to determine their own future, if at the same time they could be excluded from filing US federal income taxes every year? NONE!!!!!!

"Puerto Rico is simply occupied territory by the US!!! It should be an independant state, where people will be equal and will have more rights!!!" European is correct, the US should repeal the Foraker Act and let PR become an autonomous nation like Haiti or Cuba. The Boricua living here are arrogant ultra-nationalistic parasites. More PRs live in the US than on their "homeland", yet view the US with contempt and disdain, even though they reap the benefits of a tax-free existence. They are American citizens in name only. Let's do them all a favor and deport them back to their beloved homeland to let them form their own government without US intervention or US dollars. We'll see how well that works.

I have spent a lot of time in puerto Rico {months at a time} and like the island and the people very much. It is a tropical paradice and has a nice rain forest. It would be a very nice place for a retirement home, the weather is so beautiful. Anyone taking a vacation there would be happy. So far as the islands internal politics I am not up to date on what is currently going on there. The people there always seemed to treat mainland Americans very good and many of the people like their islands status. I don't believe the Puerto Ricans even have to pay federal income tax because of their status, so it may cost them each a ton of money if they become a state and have to pay these high income taxes like all the other states. I wish the best for Puerto Rico either way.
