Romania will place 24 American ballistic missile launchers on it territory. The plans have been confirmed by the country's President Traian Basescu.

“With the appearance of the ABM system, Romania will get the guarantee of being safe from any missile attacks,” he said, stressing that “this will be a defensive system which couldn’t be transformed into an offensive one.”

Basescu also noted that all the gossip over the supposed danger from such systems is “propagandistic.”

This system is part of President Obama’s revamped anti-ballistic missile shield, which is intended to start operating in 2015.

Washington says it's designed to counter the threat from Iran.

But Russia has criticized the shield, saying US missiles near its borders are a danger to its security.

However, Mikhail Troitsky from the Moscow State University of International Relations doesn’t think these deployments constitute a grave threat to Russia.

“This is definitely not a threat, this is just a risk that may materialize into something worse in the few years, but it is not still a strategic missile defense system and this is very long term,” he told RT. “And it clearly has the potential to derail US-Russian negotiations on a new START treaty, if both sides react gravely to that deployment.”

Acording to me: The ballistic missiles will never bee offensive weapons against russia, Romania wouldn't risk a war against Russia so it wouldn't allow Americans to put offensive weapons putting Romanian civilians at risk. No one is willing to risk to attack Russia, and why would we? our life standards are good enough But if Putin ever lauches a nuke on any NATO country the real party begins and Russia will be 1 outnumbered 2 outgunned 3 outdated against us all .

@Free Thinker, I disagree NATO has any moral or credence based on capacity at least when it comes to formidable adversaries. It is a known fact that in the case of Serbia and Iraq both countries had been subjected to the nation-destroying sanctions for 10-15 years which undermined their defence capacities. Both countries had also been infiltrated by the NATO/Western financed agents burrowing through the states' fibre. A similar scenario is being written for Russia. Whether or not it is going to be successful is still to be seen.

Its easy being an armed chair general in the comfort of are homes, But my opinion is and will remain that no one will intervene, For the United States to intervene even if she was foolish enough no country in the region will aloud its territory to be used against Russia the consequence will be to high for that country, Do you think Turkey will let its territory to be used against Russia or is it Bulgaria,.....i come from that part of the world we don't need countries from far away to come in this part creating problems for us,.... i guess we agree to disagree.
