Moscow says including US monitors in the EU Mission to Georgia is counter-productive. That is according to the Russian Foreign ministry.
"It is an absolutely unacceptable idea," the source in the ministry was quoted by Itar-Tass news agency as saying. "Moreover, it may increase the potential for conflict in the region, taking into account the US’s role in last August's events."
The source said the EU peacekeepers' presence stabilizes the situation in the region. However, he labeled US plans as “counterproductive”, as this "this will not change anything”.
Georgia had asked the EU to allow US representatives in the observing mission after the withdrawal of OSCE and United Nations representatives from the region last month.
Russia recognized South Ossetia’s and Abkhazia's independence following the war with Georgia last August, and sent its representatives to secure stability in the region.
