Saakashvili maneuvers to stay afloat

There is little mystery in Saakashvili’s request to the US to join the EU Monitory mission around the seceded regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, now recognized by Russia as independent and sovereign states.

I see some problems with American "observers" in Georgia but also some possible advantages. We would have people there while Saakashvili is busy oppressing the opposition, and maybe this time CNN would get photos of the protestors in the streets to show folks back home. Also, Saakashvili would have to be careful about creating more "incidents" at South Ossetia checkpoints while his patrons are present. He already got embarrassed once when he staged an incident while a Polish official was visiting. Not a good way to make friends and persuade them your cause is just!
