Actually, all drugs were legal during the period of greatest real economic growth in US history, from the Civil War until the Great Depression. Legalizing drugs today would reduce the overall negative effects of drug use, because many people would shift from alcohol to other drugs far less dangerous to others. Drunk drivers kill over 25,000 innocent people in the United States each year, so each decade, they kill 250,000 people due to their use of this legal, sedative drug. With computerized fingerprint readers, computerized data storage, and the internet, registered drug purchasers could be tracked, so that sale to children could be better prevented. Productivity would probably increase, tax revenues would explode, fewer police will be corrupted, and police could work on violent crime. Crime would decrease, since organized criminals could never produce drugs cheaper than the government. Only a fool would risk jail,or worse, when you could purchase anything you want, legally, and risk free. And where will the terrorists get all their money if we take away their drug sales, which now earn them billions yearly? Legalization won't happen because the propanganda campaign, first waged by William Randolf Hearst, when he owned most United States newspapers, has turned out to be the most effective use of racism and fear in world history. His propaganda forced Congress to outlaw cocaine, after his papers said that black men were raping white women in the South after using cocaine. Similiarly, they published that Chinese men were seducing white women in opium dens. The Mexicans were said to shoot up Southwestern towns after smoking pot. He was a racist when many people still accepted it, and he controlled information before TV. A series of documentaries on the History Channel told the whole story.
