The new Hollywood blockbuster “Avatar” is a story about American military imperialism occupying foreign territory in order to get resources, blogger and activist David Swanson argued to RT.

"It is stunning to watch millions of Americans go and pack theaters and cheer for ... " Lets to do not substitute one thing by another and, then, made absolutely wrong conclusions based on that. Vast majority of Americans go the this movie and "cheer up" not for the story in it, but because of the revolutionary 3D technology and art of cinematography created by James Cameron and his crew. The essence of the story is as old as the Hollywood itself and as stupid as any its blockbuster movie targeting mass audience. And real fans of this movie absolute don't care about that story. It is sad that David Swanson saw only this part of the movie and, somehow missed the most important element of it. I guess, he forgot to take his 3D classes...

I thought the moment I saw this movie that Cameron was depicting everything that is happening with our country and other nations. We are not producing anything here, so we have to take what we need from other countries. The interviewer was completely wrong by suggesting that the movie was not like Iraq/Afghanistan and soon to be Iran and Pakistan. She said that america is not trying to take over and occupy these places. False, when we have a military base in Iraq bigger than Vatican city. We are there to Occupy and Stay. Iraq is American owned...For Now Ask senator Ron Paul what he thinks. Now that Iran no longer takes the Petro Dollar lets see how long it will be when we either use Israel who is not part of the NPT or wrongfully invades Iran. If we had no military influence over 130+ countries, I wonder how well our economy would really be without wars. Our government is producing near nothing but stimulus and stealing from everyone else around the world and at home. This movie was on Spot

The director of this film, was born and raised in Canada. Canadians haveoften different take toward the world than the British or the American Hollywood films making culture. In the 1960s and 1970s, another Canadian director makde lot of films in Hollywood with deeper social meanings. His name is Norman Jewison. One fot the film he made in Hollywood is a witty but a subtle critique of deeply entrenched U.S Russophobia. The film I speak of is "The Russians Are Coming". Canadians do lot of acting and film making in Hollywood but Canadian film makers are often anti-war, anti-imperialism, and anti-racist-not always but often.

Cinematography always, aaaalways reflects or is at least closely related to the current social, political and educational situation of the world (of the Unites States, mostly). Somehow, this awesome, colourful movie, might be showing what may occur in a not-too-distant future (natural resources are being devastated). Although, it would be interesting to know Cameron's impression and perspective of the current world. :) PS. more opinions please!

Hey Doesn't Russia have a lot of natural resources? No, just kidding. I think it's a great move and there is no real mystery about what it's about. Everyone knows who the good guys are and who the bad guys are. Which is what makes it so attractive.

Really??? Since when haave we gotten ANYTHING out of going into Iraq??? Have we gotten free oil? No. Have we gotten free anything? No! We are there to establish a democracy and to restore order to a nation ruled by a cruel, eil dictator. My sister and Dad both work in Iraq, and their jobs are to help iraq get back on its feet, my dad is helping establish provincial gevernments, my sister, helping economical issues. My dad is teaching the iraqis how to govern themselves. The people are even allowed to tell us to get out, which they have. We are no longer in their cities, unless they ask for help. You need to get out of your extreme, leftist point of view, and see the world for what it really is. By the way, I'm a moderate conservative, democratic of some issues, but lean republican on others

I can't believe what I am reading. I have seen the movie and thought it was a techincal effects achievement in itself. As for any political agenda or geopolitical reference is hogwash. It amazes me to no end that foreigners in general get their ideas and perceptions of America through Hollywood. Let's be very clear here, Hollywood exist to make MONEY....period, and has no relationship to REAL America or the REAL American people who live and work everyday to keep the country running. In essence, we are bumps on a log to the Hollywood dream machine.....we are boring working class. The only thing Hollywood wants is your ticket money. They could care less about anything else. This is so ignorant and stupid, it is just a MOVIE.

I think the following quote from James Cameron puts a lot of his intentions for Avatar into perspective: "It may seem like a simple story about "nasty" humans fighting with those beautifully, spiritually evolved Navi. But it's really not, because we make science fiction as human beings for human consumption. It means the Navi represent something that is our higher selves, or our aspirational selves, what we would like to think we are or maybe what we realize we're losing. And the humans in the film, even though there are some good ones salted in, represent what we know to be the parts of ourselves that are trashing our world and maybe condemning ourselves to a grim future." ( Google parts of the quote, if you like, it's found in several copies online of the same interview )

Seems to me that the Pentagon would have to reprogram American soldiers who see this movie in order for them to kill and terrorize the "natives" in American occupied Afghanistan and Iraq. The Pentagon drums into their heads that they are killing and horribly maiming the "natives" of Afghanistan and Iraq in order to protect the "American way of life" in Paduca, KY or Enterprise, Ala, etc. - and, the naive American soldiers believe this blatant propaganda. This movie bursts the Pentagon propaganda bubble. I am waiting to see what the reaction of the Pentagon generals is to this movie. Some of the rightwing internet sites are already accusing the film of being anti-American.

Wow what a profound insight...so deep. Ok. This movie has been banned in China and parts of Russia because the government fears that it might represent their own miseeds. Palestinians dressed themselves up as Navi folks to protest Israelis because that is who they see themselves as. This story has been told over and over again throughout human history. In other words, it is a VERY COMMON, old, hackneyed plot, that if you had to watch Avatar to be introduced to, you must have been living under a rock. I am not saying the US didn't go to war over oil because I don't know for sure. But the Navi people resemble Native Americans more than any other group. They have a profound connection with Nature. Hardly any group of people do today.

It really does depict on resources of one's country, they go and try to get resources and if they would not cooperate they would build sanctions to it, see the movie NEW WORLD ORDER it does really make sense, and in the movie avatar when they were preparing to go for an attack to the navi what was the general speaking, the way for us to succeed is to have an preemptive attack, and another thing is in which G.W. Bush was always telling the american's "WE WILL FIGHT TERROR WITH TERROR" this was also part of the script of the general in the said movie, do you think who is the terror? Soldiers are army to praise and to be called heroes but the people who make the big law behind the curtains of each president are the TERROR...

ok im a 17 almost 18 year old male. planning on going to the military. I love this move and for the fact i understand this THEY ARE A MERCENARY GROUP, as in ex marines and soldiers, hired by a business to act as security. Now I do not agree on what they did. Also just because some one holds the title of General does not mean they are US military just a title. and main character EX marine EX its not about the US military(though it can be easily seen that way)

Interesting to see how poorly and misinformed many of the non- US commenters seem to be. No mention of the fact that USSR was notorious for raping the land and laying waste to resources only for it's own uses. America has a long history of going into places fixing the problems and then slowly pulling out over many years as it takes decades for a country to stabilize. The US gets nothing out of Iraq and it had nothing to do with oil and everything to do with the removal of a terrible dictator who routinely tortured and killed his own people. The Iraq government controls and dictates who and what the US can do in it's borders and receives far more from the US than the US gets from them. Afghanistan? look what Russia did to them, and the mess it was in under the Taliban. Lets also not forget that it is not the US solely there or directing things either NATO is in charge with more than 100 countries participating in the war there. If normal Americans had their way we would carpet bomb the place and go home. More wisely the military are building schools, housing developments, reteaching how to grow something other than drugs, encouraging women and girls to get educations. All the things not available to the people before the Americans and others came in to clean the place up. It will take generation to fix and change just as anywhere else. People caught up on the hate America stuff are blindly following propaganda created to divert your attention and blame others for all your own problems and those of your own governments. I'm not saying the US does not make mistakes but no other country does more to help others, spend more on aid, give more, and sacrifice more for others than the US and it's people. When your country and you personally give more than the average American then I'll listen to your rants. Until then sit down, shut up and grow up.

I think this guy is really looking TOO deeply into this movie. I say it parallels mostly with Pocahontas. Guy comes, falls for the tribe princess, blah blah blah. I kinda viewed the aliens more as Americans than I viewed them as 'the other'. I don't think this was an 'anti' war movie. It was an anti-ignorance movie. Besides, I don't think America's intentions in Iraq and Afghanistan are to rape the land and kill the people. (Least I hope not), so there is no reason to defend that. No matter the entity or the empire, any nation being attacked and threatened with inhalation will resist and has a right to resist. And if they fail, they have a right to be annexed. Comparing the bad-guys in Avatar to America is a far greater insult.

Also, if you enjoyed Avatar for the 'story', then there is something wrong with that. Seriously, the story was generic, the graphics however, now that, that was great!

If someone could name an example where the American military invaded anyone, anywhere in the world, for resources I'd sure like to hear about it. Especially what resources we are supposed to have gained. Anywhere. Any war... I'm waiting. When the PEOPLE of Iraq finally got to sell their own oil rather than having it stolen from them by a homegrown despot, not a single drop of it went to America. You want to hate America, go ahead. If we had not spent the last 100 years sacrificing our young men and women for other people's freedom, very few of you would have the freedom to criticize us today. If you envy our standard of living, quit electing socialist autocrats who decimate your own economies. Don't blame us for your own political stupidity. But if you are going to accuse America of invading people for resources, please have arguments more substantive than "Bush's Oil!!!!!!" or "Haliburton!!!!!1111111111111111!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" In the mean time, Get. A freaking. Life.

Marco White April 21, 2010, 05:33 quote

Duh. Of course it does! The US has invaded countries in order to insure that multi-national corporations - Exxon, Shell, BP, etc. - maintain control over the oil resources in the middle east. By "control" I mean that the US makes sure that this source of crude oil is not disrupted or "shut down" by a "hostile" nation or "terrorist" group. So yes. I think that the “purity” message in Avatar has more to do with Colonial conquest in general. i.e. White folks taking over the North and South American continents, etc. It relates to the fact that the conquest is about “stealing” resources - land, oil, gold, whatever - at the expense of the indigenous group that “is in the way” I truly believe in the films message that, unless we act, giant corporations will control the future and that governments, laws, etc. will all be manipulated or “swept aside” so that corporations ruled by the “upper” 2 percent can rape the land, the people and turn the wold into a burning pile of crap while making billions in profit!
