Americans are losing trust in the country’s media, according to the latest polls. With newspaper sales in freefall and TV channels losing their credibility, people are increasingly looking for alternatives.

Activist and journalist Luke Rutkowski says the reason for the decline in the trust of Americans towards their media is simple – lies.

“People right now are slowly waking up. There’s something going on. There’s something that the government and the media are not telling us. There is something that these corporations are doing wrong,” he said.

The corporate-run American media is in trouble. While many are quick to point the finger at the economic crisis, some professionals say the substance of what’s been presented to the public has played the biggest role in creating this climate of mistrust.

Katrina vanden Heuvel, the editor and publisher of “The Nation” magazine, says people are now looking for other media outlets because the mainstream has repeatedly failed them.

“Journalism failed in its mission to inform the American people, or to expose the lies of the Bush administration, or to expose the corporate scandals which got us into the mess we’re in. So the younger generation and others have turned away from mainstream media and have decided to find alternatives,” she said.

The editor says real professional journalism has been the victim.

“The line between news and entertainment has been blurred, if not obliterated,” she believes. “Millions of Americans turn on their TV sets – and what kind of news do they get? It’s about celebrities; it’s not about news in their communities, or news they can use. So that too is part of the crisis of American journalism today.”

Major American newspapers are on the brink of collapse. Readership has declined and sales are down.

Amid analysts’ concerns about the extinction of the newspaper in America, TV news channels are not faring much better. According to a recent survey, trust in TV coverage has dropped to 36%.

Danny Schechter, a media critic and blogger says:

“If you come to America from anywhere in the world, you sit down, and you say, ‘What’s this? American television, it all is the same, it all looks alike, it all feels alike.’ There is very little debate or diversity of prospective.”

Schechter says the mainstream American media fails to cover news both inside and outside the country.

“Does it really cover the world? No. American networks have been closing bureaus around the world,” he says. “Does it really cover the United States very well? I would argue no. Because reporting costs money, but opinions are cheap.”

Critics name strong partisan leanings on major TV channels, non-objectivity, a lack of professional journalism, and sensationalism as the reasons for the decline in audiences and the growth in mistrust.

All the commentors are very right, it's all about control of the preceptions people and using lies to get us to wage war on the rest of the world. The US and most the countries are led/influenced by the Elites (CFR, Trilateral Commission, Builderburg) who belive in eugenics, depopulation, and monetary slavery. Many Americans do not even know or care enough to support or protest any of these wars, but simply do not want to forsake our troops and so support war by default. We are not represented by our leaders, they do whatever they want and lie and say it was the will of the people. We are good people who for the most part are just simple folks being led astray by our evil shepherds. To get the truth out is difficut and nobody believes it after it is uncovered because of the mainstream media's lies.

It is true I believe American Journalist have lost their minds. Not only are the reporting evening in a totally biased and one sided way but they are very disrespectful. Mr Obama instead of President Obama. He is Commander and chief to the military communities. As a soldier its not my job to question leadership, my job is the act upon the very commands of the Commander and chief. I am educated with a Masters Degree in Science in Management with concentration in Information System Security. I am smart enough to make up my own mind as to how I should feel about situations and where my loyalties are. So tired of News people being more like TV stars. I enjoy BLOOMBERG where they present the news and leave the people to decide what matters to them. If CNN and FOX NEWS went out of business it would not hurt my feelings at all.!

The US media has been the source of lies since I remember, that is, from 1960s on. The body spreads nothing but toxicity in the form of outright lies, commission of spin and bias a well as omission of truth in every single report about any topic of interest to the people. Why does it do it? As the article says, VERY SIMPLE. The journalists cannot just tell the truth, because they are not free to report the truth as they find it. They serve the owners of the media and the ruling class of the government of the US, which are one and the same thing. Since the agedas of the US government cannot be exposed but need to be covered up, every journalist in the mainstream media must be an agent of the ruling class by necessity. It is a matter of survival. Those who serve the system well, are rewarded lavishly. Those who maintain their principles, chose unemployment of find a job in the much ignored alternative press working for a sustainable wage. They can never join the ranks of the opportunists who sell their soul for money and "fame." The reason why the media has almost hit the bottom is because their lies have become increasingly more difficult to hide. They have been exposed like never before and vast numbers of people have seen the ugly face of the establishment. There is no more hiding the truth. You believe the US press, you should expand your knowledge through the alternative press and pursue the truth relentlessly until you find the keys to open the door to lie factory that is the US media.
