“US media never gives fair, unbiased reports on Russia”

Published: 16 June, 2009, 12:28

There's hardly any opportunity for people in the West to find unbiased news on Russia, says Doctor Gordon Hahn, a U.S. expert on Russian affairs and an on-line columnist, who shared his views with RT.

I live in the West and I have access to factual reports about Russia all over the place – in newspapers, magazines, TV reports and from inumerable internet sources. Just because all such reports do not necessarily synchronise with Russia’s frankly distorted views of its own history or its gilded perceptions of its own current affairs does not mean that the reports are unfair, non-factual or biased.

It is not just in the US, in the EU is just the same. It is good that I understand Russian Language... the media in EU almost ever even wrongly translate on purpose the speeches of Medvedev, Putin and so on... it is disgusting. When I watch "LIVE" news with Medvedev, Putin and so on I see what they are saying, later when I watch them translated on the channels in Europe, they are translated differently. I even sometimes try to explain it to some of my friends and they don't belive it.

I feel sorry for Marzipan6; he miss the point completly: the article talk about western medias'reports. Sometime the medias are just incompetent. Example in France: translating Obama' speechs correctly. The biggest joke seen was Chirac's interview in bad english on CNN in 1995. As far as Russia is concerned, it is just plain biaised information. Naturally, I am surprised that we just discover that evidence . If I recall the french press during the last russian election, I had the feeling that the cold war was not over. During the french legislative elections of the summer 2007, I was in Orenburg. As far as my limited russian language'knowledge was concerned and what my russian friends translated for me, not a single nasty comment was made in that city'medias about the machiavelic comedian who was elected as president of France, two months earlier or his pro-Bush parti. Not long ago; even after the Berlin'wall fall, a father fighting against a pro-western regime to feed his family was still a terrorist and the same person fighting against a socialist-type system was still a freedom-fighter. The western hypocrisy has not much changed and nothing will happen until the imperialism fall a part and that peoples realise that they have a brain, not a cash-register. Reading the press is good; visting the country is a lot better. I shall be frank with that pseudo-person; beside having been 11 times to Russia, I also lived during 20 years in North-America. I like very much the american people but I hate the system which does not respect even its own citizen and never applied the Constitution of its funding-fathers. A few thousands creeps run the show and the rest endure the consequences of it. That insane system has gangrened so many other nations like our Little-America (France). For me, it is too much to tolerate. That is why I beg Russia and other decent nations to initiate something else. Sincerely. Jean-Claude Meslin

We all remember the Georgian-South Ossetian war.Who did not see a grown man on FOX trying to prevent a little girl and her aunt expressing their thanks to the Russians for saving them from the Georgians? Or how about the one where a Russian sniper was said to have shot an Georgian reporter in the wrist leaving only a scratch made me wonder if Russian military are arming their snipers with bb guns. How many reports were from the Ossetian Russian side? Even after the war only BBC tried to correct the misinformation it was feeding the world. Then the gas supply to the EU, Russia pumps and Ukraine steals but news reports are of evil Russia trying to freeze and control Europe. Russian economy improves and they restart their tradition military parades on red square but what do we hear? Yes Russia flexing her muscles again. One thing the media should always remember, in the Internet age you can no longer feed people rubbish and expect them to swallow it.It can now be easily checked What more, a good percentage of the world population did not live during the cold war and not easily biased

Of course, one could say the same about many Russian news outlets when it comes to reporting news about the U.S. I have heard and read so many outlandish things so often from various Russian media sources that I've lost count.

News networks are not the only betrayers,if you take Hollywood bad guys uses illegal weapons ( AK47.... )where as the good guys used American weapons(m16....),bad guys does smuggling in Russian borders where as they are stopped by US MARINES. Russians speaks and communicate in Russian, other don't understand Russian, thats why there is so much miss understanding among the people.they don't understand what Russians are thinking. the bias between Russia and the west is nothing new ,it has its root from ww1and beyond,i think modern Russia has a slow but a steady pace.the seeds of hatred was already sown and the seed has grown in to a tree.we need change in the minds of the people.

Absolutely true, they are biased, it is as simple as that, the whole tenet and slant of articles is always in a negative portrayal of Russia. Having lived in the west for many years, before returning to Russia, I have seen both sides of the coin. The western media output is controlled by the 'few' and is well versed in constructing prose, with careful construction and terminology usage, to maintain a constant bias against Russia. Selective terminology is used, and careful insertion of negative sentences and paragraphs, are always used to make even a positive piece of news about Russia, appear in an overall negative fashion. But, hey, we all know this, as is shown by the comments here, and once you do know this it all becomes a bit of fun, and not worth worrying about too much. The internet is ripping apart the media in the west, which is a good thing, hence the controls they are trying to put on it. The intelligent westerners are waking up to the fact that they are being fed a daily diet of controlled drivel, to influence their views. What do they do, get on the internet and its good to see.

I would have to say relying on the Mass Media in any government is probably not the right choice for a cirtical thinker. There are plenty of sources available to most in the West and the East. To pretend that propaganda isn't happening is to play the fool.

A good barometer is how connected the media and government are especially in foreign affairs is how they covered the Balkans wars and the Serbs were they worked hand in glove with western governments which is now well documented thanks to Serbian websites like slobodan-milosevic.org and deconstruct.net, etc and commentators like Justin Raimondo of antiwar.com. The problem with the alternative main stream media at least the most well known ones is that it is usually financed by people like George Soros , or financed through CIA outfits like RFE/RL, NED and British foreign office but of course we never get told this. In France alone they have allocated £11 million dollars to anti-Putin, anti-Russian media which Berezovsky also runs. That’s the problem with Russia they don’t have publication or websites investigating these characters like Berezovsky, Guisinky and the former Yukos shareholders and there connection to organised crime, Chechen lead terrorism, foreign intelligence, government and media like Lord Rothschild of London there activities and what there up to. Also the fact that they just happen to be Israeli citizens. It is obvious that everybody says whatever he likes to say. USA news are pro-USA and Russian news are pro-Russian. The same is true for history. Even cults have been developed by the CIA to promote the interests of USA. I suspect that Russian secret services do the same things... So my friends, news, history, religion and national ideals are toys in the hands of superpowers, trying to recruit succers and to promote their interests. If you are searching for the truth, it is far away from planet Earth..

If Russia wants to be better recognized by people living in the West, then Russia might find it interesting to acknowledge all other countries other than the USA. Russia appears to be totally focused on the American people and therefore excludes other nations as being just as important. As a Canadian citizen I feel insulted that I would be included in the American way of viewing the world including Russia. Most Western nations other than the US are very aware of American propaganda as we are aware of our own, and as you may be also of Russian propaganda. Give credit where it is due and you might find some interesting answers to your problem.
