There are a handful of media companies in the US that tend to have one commitment: not to inform the people and serve the public, but to allow their shareholders to make money.

Media is a commercial product that does not have the goal of illuminating society, or strengthening democracy and people’s knowledge, but to just have people watching TV to stick around for the commercials.

As a result, the American people are getting a certain amount of information regarding news events that tends to divide the world on an "us and them” basis, insists the award winning documentary filmmaker, blogger, journalist, and media critic Danny Schechter in an exclusive interview to RT.

I read something about thirty years ago in Mother Earth news about how research for developing Television was paid for by corporations who wanted to use it as a way to sell their products to the public. I never looked back. I listen to radio for good music. I listen to news only when it seems there is something to learn. I have been acutely aware ever since the Gulf war of the NON news that was being used to fill up airtime so that no news of what was really going on would get through. When the world is in desparate conditiion with wars and suffering everywhere, it is interesting to see how many interviews on "how to cook a meal for under ten dollars" and other NON news is aired. People need the relief, of course, but there is always the OFF button.
