Obama can sweet talk all he likes but when all the candy is gone America will not change its foreign policy, least of all towards Russia. Americans have spent time and money convincing each other they brought down the Soviet Union, it would be a show of weakness to compromise with Russia, who they consider to be a subordinate country.

I doubt very much.. for a simple reason; the cards dished out are the same cards!! Unless there is a QUALITATIVE shift in the number of cards as well as the CONTENT and SCOPE of the cards dealt, the problem will be very much there. so.. good luck.. -Raaj joshi- aventinesylla@yahoo.co.in

Yes I sort of agree with Shanan comments. but on the other-hand, I am sure that there are people in Russian and the United States (Perhaps even some politicians) who would really like to see better relations between these two countries and I honestly belive that Russia should go for the hand-grip with the U.S.A, But the same time Russian must know that The hand-shake and the Smile of the U.S.A is not to be take at face value. Because Without Russia as the only potencial Military rival of the U.S.A, then should that raval be taken away from the USA, the the only Military Enemies they will have remaining are the Imaginary ones which even now they have a few. So Yes Russia must coperate with the USA, but Russia must keep Her eyes open and focus on her own interest and goals, and the USA have her eyes steadly focus on her's. Because it could come to pass that the USA agree to reduce her Unclear War-heads at home, but at the sametime, make moves in other direction outside of the USA, but with her allies, to weaken Russia. Russia is a vast and very resourceful country. Don't fool yourself President Medvedev, What the So-called West really want to see is a Weak Russia. Reachout to the USA, but at the same time, pay special attention to the repubilcs that are Russsia's neighbours. That is where Russia's enemies are seeking to weaken Her.

Two points: 1. Let's have an international picnic. America will bring the fried chicken and hamburgers. Russia can bring the borsch, caviar and vodka! And a few more hockey players and beautiful women. 2. As to America's two envoys, Hart and Hagel are old news. America has far better representatives!!!

rhyshanan -- just as a matter of clarification, I'm just curious -- if the trillions of dollars America spent on weapons, etc., during the Cold War did not play a significant role in the end of the USSR, what might I ask was the REAL REASON? Come on dude, get real -- I just returned from a 3 week visit to Russia and the vast majority of Russian's I spoke to agreed -- America's bottomless pockets when it came to defense spending ultimately bankrupted the USSR. And, outside of a few lingering pockets of people like yourself, the vast majority of "objective" polictical scientists throughout the world universally agree. So get over it -- THE COLD WAR IS OVER and yes, the USSR LOST -- it's really that simple. But, few Americans glouted over this so-called victory -- to the the contrary, most were glad to see the Cold War end. Really dude, it is a new day and most Americans want good relations with Russia as seemed to be the case with most Russians I encountered. So stop being so **** paranoid, there is no "secret anti-Russia conspiracy" intertwined in American politics. You are living in the past ...

There are no major obstacles between Russia and the U. S. A. Everyone should try not to create new divisions. It is in both countries self interest to be partners, not adversaries. Although there certainly will be competition, both countries will benefit immensely by working toward common goals. Our countries have much more in common than differences.
