As the US continues to step up war efforts in Afghanistan, the number of US soldiers refusing deployment to war zones is also increasing. On the ground, they find themselves being terrorists, says writer Dahr Jamail.

“More troops are realizing that, given that they join the military swearing to defend and support the constitution of the US, the part of the oath says they have to follow lawful orders. So by definition, the invasion and occupation of Afghanistan, since it happened without UN Security Council ratification, in fact this is not self-defense. It wasn’t the nation of Afghanistan that attacked the US. So a soldier who follows a direct order to deploy to Iraq or Afghanistan is actually violating his own uniform code in military justice that says to follow lawful orders,” says independent journalist Jamail.

Dahr Jamal spent years in Iraq writing about what he calls the U.S. occupation of the country. He is the author of the book “The Will to Resist“, in which he attempts to explain why soldiers destined for the frontlines in Iraq and Afghanistan are going AWOL.

I've tried look at America's war involvement since 1898 and evidence points to America's involvement has been offensive period. The government lied us into war with Spain in 1898, lied us into war in WW1, lied us into war in WW2 etc. etc. The nature of America's government is such that the people, contrary to the Founders, have trusted those put in positions of power. The Founders even gave the people a 2nd Amendment as a safe guard against abuse by the government. The Constitution was given to the people, not the government. It was/is a wall protecting the people from goverment. The Founders knew first hand what a tyrannical government was. That's why it took 4 years to form a government. We have let the power we had shift to the extent the people answer to the government, not the government asnwers to the people. Jefferson said.."If we're answerable to treaties, why do we have a Constitution"? Things to consider.

I wouldn't consider the reasons of this alleged conflict of interest to be what is causing any number of soldiers to go AWOL. And I especially wouldn't consider it significant enough to call a "movement". The simple fact is, no one likes to come home only to be redeployed. To feel your life being threatened every moment of every day is extremely stressful. But that is also not an excuse accepted by the government. This seems more like a wrangling for the purpose of promoting a book.

Sorry friend but the US nor any other soviereign nation needs permission from the UN to go tot war with another country. If they did then Russia's recent war with Georgia would have to be an illegal war as well. Would it not? Not to mention of course the former led Russian USSR that invaded Czechoslovokia, Afghanistan, etc.
