Security experts said they have managed to spy on Verizon Wireless mobile phone customers by hacking into devices sold by the US carrier, further fueling the controversy over privacy issues in the wake of the NSA leaks.

:-) Nice catch, but as stated before here, I think it's less then 10%. There is so much happening under the radar that never gets disclosed, fear for stock price, fear for image, fear for customer base. There is a huge issue with R&D. R&D = Let it loose on the world, they will find bugs, exploits and after the zero day period, the vendor (hopefully) fixes them. Let's say that the security industry has no answers to prevent it from happening. It's all about the shiny user interface and marketing.. sadly.

By its original meaning, a "hack" is an original and clever piece of code that enables you to learn something, solve a problem, etc. True programmers lament at the misuse of this word, as what "hackers" do today has little to do with the origins of the meaning "to hack", which, again, meant to write a clever piece of useful code.
