Secret diplomatic documents published by WikiLeaks reveal America's views of other countries and other countries views of their neighbors; this leak was more of an embarrassment than a security revelation.
Revealed within the diplomatic cables was information sent by State Department staffers from US embassies all over the world that expressed candid opinions and observations about world leaders, their personalities, private conversations, likes and dislikes, and even pet nicknames used to describe them by US diplomats. For example, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is Robin and Prime Minister Putin is Batman.
Other earth shattering revelations included: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was referred to as “Hitler”, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi likes to party and Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi is really into flamenco dancing.
“What this does show is that US diplomats, both career Foreign Service and political appointees are the biggest gossip hounds in the world,” said Investigative journalist Wayne Madsen. “This is the kind of stuff you would see in any tabloid.”
Beyond the gossip, however, the revelations of US spying on the UN and the State Department collecting of DNA and finger prints are worrisome he said.
“It looks like these cables are selectively cherry picked,” contended Madsen. “Netanyahu has praised these, saying we [Israel] come off pretty good, so if that’s who he [Julian Assange] is aliening himself with, somebody who is not interested in peace. And we have all this negative stuff about the Arab countries, Turkey and Russia. I guess this goes to show, is there a hidden agenda here?”
Rumors are spreading that the next WikiLeaks leak will be about UFOs, others believe it may target major banks.
“I think he [Assange] is a publicity hound more than anything else,” he said. “I will reassess Assange if he has documents that show that the UFOs are going to land and take all the bankers off to another planet and rid this world of these terrible bankers”.
