Assange likely to avoid espionage charges, but might face computer fraud indictment

26.11.2013 17:00

Anonymous government officials in the United States say with more certainty than ever that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will not be charged for publishing documents on his anti-secrecy site, but the editor-in-exile isn’t exactly convinced.

Assange and Snowden should be International HEROS and not fugitives from a Corrupt, War Mongering Terrorist US!

We are not the world - yesterday's hippies are today's autocrats. The world doesn't prosecute anyone. Institutions which claim to represent the world do. Assange and Snowden will never be heroes on the part of international organizations, because that would be a liability for governments.

Don't be so quick to lionize your enemy's enemy. That haste to give them legitimacy may one day bite you too!

I find Assange arrogant, his politics overwrought. But I'm struggling to understand what his actions have to do with fraud: It sounds to me like these prosecutors are groping for a pretext to charge him with "revelations that are embarrassing".

I love Americans, with all due respect for this Russian forum, I admire America. If their government feels it's in their interest to stop him, surely they can do better than undermining the integrity and reputation of their own justice system.

By far the greatest threats to my American friends are their political "leaders". I wish them luck against their real enemies.

We, Australians ought to be ashamed that the Abbot Government like the previous ignoring to protect Julian Assange but instead have to bow down to the Americans, don't our Australian government have backbone to protect their citizens.

To Mr. Julien Assange! You are in my opinion well aware of the US attourny general and all prosecutors involved now plus the Senators and the whole legal shabang inthe US, are trying every trick in the book, "and some unwritten too" in thehope that you will return to the US! They are also play the " Drag out the time in that Embassy" they try to wear you out! Do not fall for that one! One day your chance will come! To get to a safe haven!

Terry Mckinney 08.12.2013 09:34

Why would they ever bother with charges? The mere threat has Mr.Assange so terrified that he has remained in custody for three years already. They just keep up the threat and it gets them what they want.Julian Assange where he cannot hurt them.Such is the power of the US murder machine. Not that the threat isn't real. The US has proven it is capable of anything and will justify murder without any process at all.

Didn't he have some molestation charges?

Manning has not legally changed his name,

Many people, even the obnoxious Michael Pickles Clark, know who Chelsea Manning is. That is sufficient for legalities.

jeff strehlow 26.11.2013 23:41

Like others here I wouldn't trust what the US government says. Remember when President Obama said they wouldn't intercept Mr Snowden's plane. A week or so later they had their buddies force a plane to land because they thought Mr Snowden might be aboard.

Samuel von Staunton 26.11.2013 21:21

I am inclined to agree with you regarding the wording of his comment. Yet Manning has not legally changed his name, nor has he had an operation. Mr. Clark is not wrong to insist on calling him by his legal name

Mr. Clark can call Chelsea whatever he wants. However, he insulted people who use the name Chelsea. If you don't think he insulted others, I suggest you read his post again.

She asked to be called Chelsea. Many people are honoring her request and calling her that.

mega gooroo 26.11.2013 22:37

Hero!

groingo 26.11.2013 22:35

And to the US I would say "Get Stuffed"!
T he US is the one the World needs to prosecute not the ones that brought their illegal acts to light, both Assange and Snowden should be International HEROS and not fugitives from a Corrupt, War Mongering Terrorist US!

Colin Shorey 26.11.2013 21:28

Why continue to waste everyone's time and money.Just stop telling lies and go home.

I find your comments rude and insulting to Chelsea. Who are you to throw stones with your foul mouth.

I am inclined to agree with you regarding the wording of his comment. Yet Manning has not legally changed his name, nor has he had an operation. Mr. Clark is not wrong to insist on calling him by his legal name, and on referring to him by his sex (the biological state of being) rather than his gender (the social role one takes, typically but not always linked to one's sex). Stating an observation is not an insult.

Billy 26.11.2013 21:01

Don't trust them.

sandra 26.11.2013 20:53

US government officials are liars.

Michael Pickles Clark 26.11.2013 20:27

Who the fxck is chelsea manning, you fxin retards, just give the name he was born with. He maybe gay or transgender, fk forget that and keep up with the true storyline. ?..
