Russian warship arrives in North Africa

The Russian frigate Admiral Gorshkov has docked at the port of Bizerte in Tunisia to mark the 100th anniversary of a stay in Tunisia by the Russian squadron.

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on Tuesday that the frigate’s arrival will be marked by events involving the ship’s command, Russian embassy officials, and representatives from Tunisia’s Ministry of National Defense, Navy, and Russian cultural institutions.

The Admiral Gorshkov, a Northern Fleet frigate, participated in the commemorative events, which honor the disbanding of the Imperial Russian squadron on October 29, 1924, following France’s recognition of the Soviet government.

“On this day, the flag of the Russian Fleet will be hoisted again in Bizerte after 100 years within the framework of commemorative events,” the Northern Fleet’s press service reported.

The frigate set out on its long-range mission on May 17 and has traveled over 13,000 nautical miles, including port visits in Havana, Cuba, and La Guaira, Venezuela, before entering the Mediterranean on July 24.

In early October, Bizerte opened an exhibition titled ‘Under the African Sun: Russians in Tunisia’, dedicated to the Russian squadron’s century-long legacy and connections between the Russian and Tunisian people.

Equipped with high-precision missile capabilities, the Admiral Gorshkov is a versatile, modern warship designed for long-distance maritime missions.

In June, two Russian warships, the Slava-class guided missile cruiser Varyag and the Udaloy-class frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov, arrived at the Libyan naval base in order to strengthen cooperation and coordination between the Libyan and Russian fleets.
