Race cars challenged planes to a race at the MAKS 2017 Air Show just outside Moscow. The first day of the competition resulted in a 3-3 tie. See the thrilling action in RT's video from the event.
A MiG-29UB fighter jet, Yak-54 trainer plane and Extra EA-300L aerobatic plane met with racing cars in a challenge to determine which were faster at the Zhukovsky airfield outside Moscow where MAKS 2017 air salon is underway.
The event, called the ‘Festival of Speed,’ was sponsored by Audi, which provided most of the sport cars for the race. A custom-built Seat Leon and Formula 1 race car also joined the ground team.
The competitors raced 3,000 meters on a runway, making a U-turn in the middle of the course. There were six races in total, with each plane participating in two. The first day of the competition ended in a 3-3 tie. In the first race, an MiG-29 plane was disqualified, which may have affected the outcome.
Pilot Svetlana Kapanina, flying her Extra EA-300L, won both of her races, salvaging the tie for the airplane team.
The first competition between racing cars and planes took place at the Zhukovsky airfield during the international weapons expo and forum Oboronexpo in 2014. The event was met with excitement and was incorporated into the MAKS Air Show the following year.
