The former residence of Russian imperial family, the Romanovs, in Peterhof – as well as palaces in Gatchina and Pavlovsk near St. Petersburg – celebrated the 100th anniversary of their opening to visitors. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev congratulated the historic places, calling Peterhof “the world’s only emperor’s sea residence.” The Peterhof Palace, sometimes called the "Russian Versailles,” was built on the orders of Peter the Great in 1710, and opened its doors to the public after the fall of the monarchy in Russia.
