UN’s cash problems are ‘worrying trend’ – secretary-general’s spokesperson to RT

A spokesperson for the UN secretary-general told RT that continuous funding shortfalls at the organization pose an “increasingly worrying trend,” as Antonio Gutierrez issues a plea for members to pay their dues.

Stephane Dujarric’s comments come as his boss issued a letter to members which warned that the 193-nation intergovernmental body was “running out of cash sooner and staying in the red longer.” Dujarric warned that it may impact on its ability to “deliver on some of the mandates,” adding that the UN is now looking at areas where it could save some money.

Areas such as humanitarian work would not be affected, however, as its funding comes out of a different pot than the UN’s regular budget and is subject to separate cash appeals.
