Russia is exploring the possibility of Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov meeting US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Singapore later this week.
The possibility of holding bilateral talks with Pompeo is currently “being worked through,” the Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.
Lavrov and Pompeo met each other in person of the first time during the July 16 talks between presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Helsinki. Before that, the ministers held a phone conversation, primarily aimed at facilitating the upcoming meeting.
The ministers shared another phone call a week after the Helsinki talks, discussing Syria, North Korea, and ways to normalize US-Russian relations.
Lavrov is also considering meeting his counterparts from China, South Korea, Australia, Laos, Cambodia, and Singapore.
The ASEAN summit is scheduled to take place on August 2-4.
