Putin says era of the Trump ‘witch hunt’ should never be repeated

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he hopes the “witch hunt” era will not be repeated in American politics and that investigations into US President Donald Trump’s alleged collusion with Moscow were a dark page in history.

Speaking at the International Arctic Forum in St. Petersburg on Tuesday, Putin was asked by an American journalist whether he was happy for Trump following Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s findings. After a two-year-long investigation, Mueller found no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian officials in 2016.

Putin said the investigation was a “dark page” in American history and one he would “not like to ever be repeated.”

Mueller wrapped up his long-running investigation in late March. A summary of the results sent to the US Congress, quoting the full report, said investigators “did not establish that members of the Trump Campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government.”

Testifying before Congress on Tuesday, US Attorney General William Barr, who authored the summary, said the full Mueller report will be released to the public within a week.
