It would end in ‘blood loss’: Mexico, Cuba urge end to coup attempt in Venezuela

Mexico and Havana are calling to end the ongoing coup attempt led by US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido in Venezuela, saying that it would likely escalate into a bloody conflict.

“The Mexican Government is closely following the situation developing in Venezuela and expresses it worry over the possible escalation of violence and blood loss that could occur because of it,” the government said in a statement.

Mexican President Lopez Obrador said Venezuelans should remain peaceful, after self-proclaimed interim president Juan Guaido on Tuesday attempted to organize a military overthrow of the Nicolas Maduro government.

Guaido, who enjoys the support of the United States and dozens of regional allies, called on Venezuela’s military to rise up and overthrow the Maduro government on Tuesday.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel tweeted that Cuba rejects “this coup movement that tries to fill the country with violence,” and called the coup plotters “traitors.”

Cuba’s FM also urged an end to the violence, calling on the US to “halt aggressions to the peace.”
