Shallow 5.0 magnitude earthquake strikes Taiwan
A 5.0-magnitude earthquake has jolted Taiwan some 31km (19 miles) southwest of Hualien, at a shallow depth of 10km, the US Geological Survey has reported.
The tremors were felt throughout central Taiwan, according to local media. The quake rocked the Chinese territory just after noon on Sunday local time.
Hualien County is a sparsely populated, mountainous area on Taiwan’s eastern coast with a total population of about 330,000.
Sunday’s quake comes less than a day after the same area was shaken by a 4.5-magnitude tremor on Saturday evening.
