Irish court hands Conor McGregor suspended jail sentence

Former UFC champion Conor McGregor has been handed a five-month suspended sentence and was suspended from driving for two years over a road incident in his hometown of Dublin, according to media reports.

On Wednesday, the 36-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of dangerous driving and one count of careless driving at Blanchardstown District Court in the Irish capital.

He was also fined €5,000 ($5,404) for what the judge described as “an appalling series of dangerous driving incidents.”

The offences took place in March 2022 while the father of four was driving a Bentley convertible.

The court was told that McGregor ran a red light, sped in and out of traffic and almost collided with another motorist as he navigated the N4/M50 interchange in Palmerstown and Lucan Road, all while being uninsured and having no license.

The MMA star was then pulled over by Gardai and had his supercar seized. The vehicle was later returned to him. McGregor has reportedly failed to produce his documents within ten days.

On Wednesday, the ex-UFC fighter arrived at the court in his Bentley, dressed in a blue check three-piece suit, and sat in the public gallery until his case was called. He reportedly did not address the court and sat in the dock with his hands clasped throughout the hearing.

McGregor was named by Forbes as the world’s highest-paid sports star in 2021, when he earned over €165 million.
