Donald Trump’s triumph in the US presidential election is a defeat for “liberal” ideology and shows that legacy media can’t be trusted, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has said.

Like Trump, Fico narrowly survived an assassination attempt which he alleged was the product of a highly polarized media environment.

“We respect the choice made by American citizens, because we do not interfere in the internal politics of other states and we don’t lecture anyone,” Fico said on Wednesday.

Congratulating Trump, Fico called his election a “defeat of liberal and progressive ideas.”

The Slovak prime minister went on to slam the American media coverage of the campaign, pointing out that the outcome of the vote was the exact opposite of what they had been trying to create. Trump’s victory confirmed that “one should never trust the media and the polls,” which are “90% made to order,” Fico said.

The EU in Brussels will “sweat” in response to Trump’s victory, Fico said, noting that the change of circumstances in Washington might open up questions about the future relationship between the US and the EU.

Slovak President Peter Pellegrini also congratulated Trump, pledging to “make the transatlantic bond great again” and vowing that Bratislava would remain “a strong and reliable ally” of NATO.

Meanwhile, Fico has expressed hope that Trump might call for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and said he supported a peace plan put forth by China and Brazil to end the conflict with Russia as soon as possible.
