Rioters set tram on fire in Amsterdam (VIDEO)

Rioters set a tram on fire in the Dutch city of Amsterdam on Monday, several days after an antisemitic mob attacked fans of an Israeli football club. 

Police said the disturbances started at around 9:15 pm local time on a square in the northwest of the city.

According to local media, several dozen rioters launched fireworks and threw stones at police officers, and also at cars and buses. 

The rioters were heard shouting antisemitic slogans, the public broadcaster NOS said.

Journalist Jesper Roele posted a video of a cyclist being attacked by a rioter.

Police said three people have been arrested, and that no bystanders were injured.

Paris mounts huge security operation for France-Israel match

In a separate statement on Monday, police said five additional suspects had been detained as part of a “large-scale investigation” into the clashes that took place on November 7 following a football match between local team Ajax and the Tel Aviv club Maccabi. The Israeli fans were attacked by mobs shouting pro-Palestinian and anti-Jewish slogans. More than 60 people were arrested.

Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof has condemned the attacks committed by men “with a migration background.” 

“It was unadulterated antisemitic violence,” he said on Monday, as quoted by AFP. The prime minister demanded “hard action” against those responsible.

Many countries have seen an upswing in antisemitic incidents since the war in Gaza broke out on October 7, 2023. The fighting between Israel and Hamas was triggered by a surprise raid by Palestinian militants, which killed some 1,200 people. Hamas took more than 200 hostages, around 100 of which remain in captivity.

More than 43,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the start of the IDF operation in the enclave.
