Biden becomes great-grandfather (PHOTOS)
Outgoing US President Joe Biden announced becoming a great-grandfather on Wednesday with the birth of his eldest granddaughter’s first child.
Naomi Biden Neal, the 31-year-old daughter of Hunter Biden and his first wife Kathleen Buhle, gave birth to a baby boy at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to media reports.
Joe Biden, who was in Los Angeles and saw the baby at the hospital, announced the birth at the end of an official briefing on the wildfires in Southern California. Commenting on the disaster, he noted it was still unclear whether the Los Angeles home of his son Hunter, where he lived with his wife Melissa Cohen, had been destroyed.
“But the good news is I’m a great-grandfather as of today,” he told the news conference as quoted by USA Today. “A 10-pound, 4-ounce baby girl,” Biden said, quickly correcting himself “Baby boy. So, I’ll remember this day.”
Shortly thereafter, First Lady Jill Biden shared a photo on Instagram of herself and her husband holding the baby, captioning it “we are proud to introduce you to our great-grandson William Brannon Neal, IV.”
They spent about 40 minutes visiting Naomi and the child, according to the White House.
In an interview with USA Today published on Wednesday, Biden revealed that his granddaughter was having a caesarian section that day.
Naomi Biden married attorney Peter Neal at the White House in 2022, with the ceremony marking the first time a sitting president’s grandchild had been wed there. She announced her pregnancy in November in a social media post to mark Election Day.
According to media reports, the newborn has the same name as Neal’s brother, who died at age 19 in a car accident in 2009.
The 82-year-old Joe Biden has seven grandchildren, whom he has often said he contacts on a daily basis.
