EU ‘worried’ by attempted Ukrainian attack on gas system
The European Commission has expressed concern over reports of a thwarted Ukrainian drone strike on a gas pipeline that supplies several of the bloc’s member states.
Moscow said on Monday that Kiev’s forces had launched nine explosives-laden drones, targeting a section of TurkStream in southern Russia over the weekend.
Launched in 2010, the pipeline has an annual capacity of 31.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas, and pumps Russian fuel to Türkiye, and onward to Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Greece.
During a press briefing on Monday, the commission spokesperson for energy, climate and environment, Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, stated that “obviously, any attack on energy infrastructure is something that is worrying.”
“We [have not had] any particular contacts on this reporting today with the Ukrainian side, but obviously [we] keep monitoring the situation as regards any security supply issue in Ukraine, Moldova as well as our member states,” she added.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry’s statement on Monday, the kamikaze UAVs were brought down in the vicinity of the Russkaya gas compressor station near the village of Gaikodzor in Russia’s Krasnodar Region. The facility plays a key role in the operation of the TurkStream pipeline. Military officials said Kiev’s attempted attack was “aimed at stopping the supply of gas to European nations.”
While the sortie was largely repelled, one fixed-wing drone crashed close to the gas compressor station and caused minor damage, which was swiftly fixed by the facility’s personnel, the Russian military claimed. The incident caused no interruption in supplies, the statement noted.
This is not the first time Moscow has accused Kiev of attempting to sabotage the TurkStream pipeline.
Commenting on the reported attack in a post on Facebook on Monday, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto described the conduit as one that has reliably operated for years, and proved “indispensable for the supply of natural gas” to Hungary.
“We expect everyone to respect the safety and operability of this transport route,” the diplomat added.
Last year, Kiev refused to renew a multiyear contract with Moscow, which allowed the transit of Russian gas through its territory to Eastern Europe. Consumer nations, including Hungary and Slovakia, slammed the decision, accusing the Ukrainian leadership of causing an energy crisis to serve its political goals.
