Israeli party leader calls Trump ‘messenger of God’

The US president has proposed taking control of Gaza and turning it into the “Riviera of the Middle East”
Israeli party leader calls Trump ‘messenger of God’

The leader of Israel’s Ultra-Orthodox Shas party has claimed that US President Donald Trump is “acting as a messenger of God for the Jewish people.” Aryeh Deri was responding to the US president’s proposal for America to assume control over Gaza and displace its millions of residents.

Trump’s proposition, unveiled during a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Tuesday, involves the US taking responsibility for dismantling unexploded ordnance, leveling destroyed structures, and redeveloping Gaza. He suggested that the area could become a “magnificent” place, attracting people from around the world.

“I don’t want to be cute. I don’t want to be a wise guy, but – the Riviera of the Middle East. This could be so magnificent,” Trump said.

The reaction among Israeli politicians has been overwhelmingly enthusiastic.

“You are acting as a messenger of God for the Jewish people, and you have achieved great success because of your steadfast stand on the right side of the people of Israel against all its enemies,” Deri responded.

Netanyahu noted, “I think it is something that could change history, and it is worthwhile really pursuing this idea.”

Former National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir expressed his excitement on social media, writing, “Donald, this looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship.” Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich also voiced support, emphasizing the potential for significant positive change in the region.

However, the proposal has drawn international criticism. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the plan, asserting that it violates international law and disregards the rights of the Palestinian people.

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan, have also rejected the idea, describing it as amounting to ethnic cleansing. They emphasized the importance of a two-state solution and the need to rebuild Gaza without displacing its residents.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated Russia’s stance that a resolution to the Middle East conflict should be based on the coexistence of two states – Israel and Palestine.

Trump’s proposal has also drawn condemnation from several EU leaders, China, Brazil, Australia, and the UN.
