Conor McGregor touts bid for Irish presidency

Conor McGregor touts bid for Irish presidency

Former UFC champion Conor McGregor has again announced that he’ll run for Irish president in this year’s elections, and promised to oppose the EU Migration Pact, adopted by the European Parliament last year, if he wins.

“The next presidential election must take place by 11 Nov 2025. Who else will stand up to Government and oppose this bill? I will!” McGregor wrote on X on Thursday.

“As President, I would put forth this bill to referendum,” he wrote, adding that “it is neither mine nor governments choice to make. It is the people of Ireland’s choice!”

The post comes just days after McGregor met with US President Donald Trump in the White House. Speaking to the press afterwards McGregor accused the Irish government of politically disenfranchising the people of Ireland.

Irish Prime Minister (Taoisaech) Micheal Martin later criticized McGregor on X, calling the fighter wrong and opposing the views of the Irish people.

In 2023, McGregor emerged as a frontman for Ireland’s underrepresented right wing, publicly criticizing the Irish immigration system after an Algerian-born man stabbed three children and a care worker outside a school in Dublin.

Ireland’s government later accused McGregor of stoking the riots that broke out following the attack.

Despite a cult following, the fighter remains a divisive and controversial figure. Last year, a civil trial in an Irish court found McGregor guilty of of raping a woman in 2018. The former UFC star has appealed the verdict, requesting to file evidence, and claimed that he only had consensual sex.
