Armenians are remembering 1.5 million of their countrymen who were killed by the Ottoman Empire during the Armenian genocide of 1915.
On this day 93 years ago the Ottoman Empire (present day Turkey) is said to have begun a massacre against Armenians living in the country. In the Armenian capital, Yerevan hundreds of thousands of people are expected to gather at the monument to the genocide and light candles in memory of the victims. Russia and twenty one other countries officially recognise the events of 1915 as genocide. Meantime, Turkey refuses to recognise the massacre as genocide and claims these figures are greatly exaggerated.
