World War II veterans tell their most memorable stories and recall the brightest memories of the last world war.
Léon Gautier, a French commando who landed in Normandy on D-Day in 1944, said they had to ignore those who fell. Unlike in “Saving Private Ryan,” they did not have time to take care of those who were wounded – the only thing they kept in mind was taking blockhouses.
“We had a job to do. You have to run quickly, never stay in one place, because if you have the misfortune of stopping, you become a sitting target. It was hammered in our heads,” recalled the veteran.
