Municipal elections have taken place in Georgia. Counting is underway as exit polls show the United National Movement party leading with 68 per cent of the vote.
The head of Georgia’s central election committee said turnout was more than 51 per cent. This is enough to declare the elections valid. The front-runner is followed by the Republican bloc and the Labour party, with 12 and ten per cent respectively. There have been claims of foul play from opposition party representatives but the central election committee said no violations had been recorded.
