Kazakh filmmaker Erkin Rakishev is hitting back at the “Borat” film, which raised more than a few eyebrows in the Central Asian republic.
Four years after the top-grossing US film about a hapless Kazakh TV reporter, Kazakhstan's premier comedy director has come up with a riposte.
The main character of the “sequel” is Bilo, Borat’s brother, only briefly mentioned in the original. Together the two brothers engage in various high-jinks.
“Hiding behind their freedom of speech and democracy, Westerners insulted out nation,” said Rakishev, “They made us seem backward – it's all lies. Now, we are striking back.”
The new film centers on an American keen to discover the real Kazakhstan after seeing the original movie.
“We have cars and technology here in Astana – nothing like the American film!” said Anton Mitnov, who plays Bilo.
“In our film, brother Bilo gets married to a donkey!” revealed the director part of the intrigue.
“The makers of the movie made the whole world laugh at us, we will make the whole world laugh at them,” stated Rakishev.
There have been several previous responses to “Borat”, including a video by a rap collective and some video clips in Russian.
This time the producers are hoping for an international release.
