A Christmas tree has lit up central Moscow with energy-efficient lights powered by bicycle dynamos. Organised by the World Wildlife Fund, the event was attended by leading environmentalists and celebrities who pedalled to bring the lights to life.
The aim of the event on Red Square is to promote energy-efficient technologies to curb greenhouse gas emissions. The event was held exactly a year before an environmental conference in Copenhagen where a post-Kyoto protocol is expected to be signed. Also, on December 12, a conference on climate change ended in Poznan, Poland.
