Murdered Politkovskaya remembered two years on

It is two years since investigative journalist Anna Politskovskaya was shot dead near her apartment in Moscow. Hundreds have attended a special service in the city to commemorate her death.

The murder of the prominent Kremlin critic shocked the world. Three suspects are currently awaiting trial in connection with the case.

Politkovskaya was Russia's most prominent reporter, gaining international recognition for her sharp criticism of the Kremlin. She was shot down outside her Moscow apartment two years ago. Analysts say that the murder was an apparent contract-killing, closely connected to her work.

Politkovskaya's colleagues at the Novaya Gazeta newspaper have been closely following the investigation into her murder.

Deputy editor Sergey Sokolov told RT: “We’re closely cooperating with the investigation. We have our own versions and information about the people who are behind this murder but I think it’s still too early to make it public.”

At the moment the main suspect is 34 year old Chechen resident Rustam Makmoodov.

Although charged with murder, he still remains at large in Europe. Investigators have issued an international arrest warrant.

But even if Makmoodov was the one who pulled the trigger, there is still a pressing question that remains – who ordered the killing? And more significantly what was the motive? It seems that the facts and speculation surrounding the case will continue for many years to come.
