The Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has officially recognised the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. It means the Central American country is the first country after Russia to formally regard the two republics as autonomous states.

Nicaragua gives “full recognition” to the “sister” republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as “new members of the community of independent nations of the world, whom we welcome,” Nicaragua’s Foreign Ministry quoted the presidential decree. The president first expressed his support for Moscow's stance earlier this week. Now the decree has been signed, Nicaragua's Foreign Ministry said the country would immediately establish ties with Sukhum and Tskhinval and eventually send ambassadors.
