An Investigation Committee under Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has launched a new criminal case against tycoon Boris Berezovsky.

Investigators say the British Home Secretary granted Berezovsky asylum after he claimed Russia's special services were planning to assassinate him – a statement which the prosecutors say is false. After Berezovsky's self-exile, the millionaire was accused of a number of crimes in Russia, including fraud and preparing a violent overthrow of Putin's government. In 2007 a trial in absentia began in Moscow, in which Berezovsky was accused of embezzling money from the Russian airline company Aeroflot in the 1990s.
