A series of explosions have hit a railway station in western Georgia. Georgian police have detained a man in connection with the attack, which caused delays on the rail network.
It is unclear whether the man was detained as a witness or as a suspect in the case, Georgia’s Imedi TV reports.
Three separate explosions targeted the railway station in the city of Zugdidi in the western part of the country on the night of June 11. The first occurred in an empty cargo carriage, and then another device went off in a trash bin on the station. Police say the explosives destroyed sections of rail and caused structural damage to the station building. The third blast damaged a vehicle parked by the police station nearby.
One station worker has been injured.
It is reported that a train electrician suffered minor injuries and trains were delayed for several hours on the network.
The man detained reportedly told the police that he saw two individuals running from the station right after the blasts.
“These blasts were carried out by those who doesn’t want peace and stability for the region,” says the official statement released by Georgia’s Interior Ministry.
