Poland is calling for talks on a new framework agreement between Russia and the European Union – the basis for future co-operation and partnership. The Polish Foreign Minister said Warsaw will not make any extra demands before the meeting.
Poland previously blocked negotiations after Russia banned the import of Polish meat over hygiene concerns – a move Warsaw saw as politically motivated. Poland's new government was elected in 2007 and pledged to improve relations with Russia. Since then the meat embargo has been lifted. Another major issue for Warsaw – energy security – is also on the agenda. “I said it very clearly and I will say it once again: Poland will not impede EU-Russia negotiations. My government seeks good relations with Russia on condition that our demands are met,” Radoslaw Sikorsky, Poland’s Foreign Minister said. “After cancellation of the meat embargo, after having an agreement with other EU countries about negotiations with Russia in which the European Commission will be obligated to negotiate conditions that will improve energy security for the whole EU. Poland will not increase its demands,” he said.
