Palestinian leader Abbas in Riyadh amid Jerusalem turmoil
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday for talks with King Salman and his heir, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The trip follows a US decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. A week ago, heads of state from Muslim countries met in Turkey to reject and denounce President Donald Trump’s move. Saudi Arabia and some of its allies were notably absent from that summit. Reports allege that the kingdom is privately pressuring Abbas to relinquish Palestinian claims over East Jerusalem in exchange for continued US pressure against Saudi rival Iran. The UN General Assembly is expected to vote after the US vetoed a Security Council resolution that would have required the Trump administration to rescind its Jerusalem decision.
