1 killed, 16 injured in Madagascar opposition protest – medics
At least one person has died in the capital of Madagascar, Antananarivo, as a result of opposition demonstrations on Saturday, Reuters reports, citing a city hospital director. "One person came but we could do nothing for him when he arrived," Olivat Rakoto said, adding that 17 people were taken to the Joseph Ravoahangy Andrianavalona hospital. Witnesses in the hospital told Reuters the injuries were caused by gas canisters police used to disperse the crowd. Hundreds of protesters went out to rally against new election laws, which opposition lawmakers say prevent their candidate, former leader Marc Ravalomanana, from running in the upcoming presidential election.
