Haspel to promise Senate to not reinstate torture as CIA head
Gina Haspel, US President Donald Trump's pick to lead the CIA, will “clearly and without reservation” promise the lawmakers that she “will not restart such a detention and interrogation program” like those that were introduced after 9/11 to tackle terrorists, excerpts from her prepared testimony, released on Tuesday, show. Haspel is set to be grilled by the Senate during her confirmation hearing on Wednesday. Her nomination has been widely criticized over her record of allegedly overseeing torture during her time at the CIA. Last month, over a hundred retired US top brass called on lawmakers to reject her nomination for her being “intimately involved in torture.”
