Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Monday that her country abides by sanctions imposed by the United Nations but not those imposed by any other state, such as those announced by the US against Iran. She also said that New Delhi’s position was independent of any other country. “India follows only UN sanctions, and not unilateral sanctions by any country,” she said. New Delhi and Tehran have longstanding political and economic ties, with Iran one of India’s top oil suppliers. Swaraj met Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif in the Indian capital on Monday to build support against US withdrawal from the nuclear accord, Reuters reports. After the ministers’ meeting, the Indian government issued a statement saying that New Delhi wants nations that are party to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal to engage constructively with Tehran.
