Indonesian police fatally shoot 11 petty criminals, given license to kill in lead-up to Asian Games
Police in Indonesia have killed 11 people after rounding up and shooting at 52 alleged petty criminals in the lead-up to next month’s games.
Jakarta Police spokesman Prabowo Argo Yuwono said that nearly 2,000 people have been arrested in July’s anti-crime campaign, with Yuwono making no apology for police taking “firm measures.” In total, 320 accused criminals have been shot as a warning to other criminals.
Human rights groups have been critical of the heavy handed police action. Amnesty International told the ABC that Jakarta Police are “in breach of Indonesia’s constitution and Indonesia’s principle of the rule of law.”
