Emmerson Mnangagwa sworn in as Zimbabwe’s next president
Emmerson Mnangagwa took the oath of office on Sunday to become the third president of Zimbabwe. He was sworn in before a stadium crowd, days after Zimbabwe’s Constitutional Court upheld Mnangagwa’s July 30 election win following a challenge by opposition leader Nelson Chamisa. Zimbabwe’s new president now faces the challenge of persuading the international community that the army crackdown against opposition supporters that left six dead, as well as procedural lapses during the election process, will not see him falter on his vows to usher in reforms following Robert Mugabe’s reign of corruption and economic mismanagement.
