Russia believes Damascus should regain control over NE Syria as soon as possible – Lavrov

Moscow believes the Syrian government should regain control over the country’s northeastern region as soon as possible, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday. “There is a need to resolve the issue concerning the country’s northeast and the left bank of the Euphrates River in order to… ensure the restoration of the legitimate government’s control over the region,” Lavrov said at a news conference in Moscow. Among other important goals, the Russian top diplomat cited the need to build dialogue with the Kurds and secure the interests of Turkey “as far as security in Syria’s border areas is concerned,” TASS reports.
