Egypt’s election commission said on Wednesday that a referendum on constitutional amendments will take place on April 20-22. They include changes potentially allowing President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to stay in office until 2030. A second amendment would provide for setting up an upper parliamentary chamber. The previous day, Egypt’s parliament approved the amendments. The changes would extend Sisi’s current term to six years from four and then allow him to run again for a third term, which would last six years. Cairo was full of banners encouraging Egyptians to participate in the voting even before the date for the referendum was confirmed, Reuters reported.
